These are general ranges consistent with typical residential well pump work nationally, not a fixed local price list. Get a specific quote for your well.

What moves a job to the higher end

  • Well depth. A submersible pump 300+ feet down costs more to pull and reset than one at 80 feet — more wire, more pipe, more labor time.
  • Access. A well house or easy-access wellhead is faster to work on than one buried, boxed in, or requiring equipment to reach.
  • Horsepower and pump type. Larger homes or properties with irrigation demand need higher-output pumps, which cost more than a standard 1/2 or 3/4 HP residential unit.
  • Wiring condition. If old wiring needs to be replaced along with the pump (common on older systems), that adds labor and material cost beyond the pump itself.
  • Emergency/same-day timing. Most contractors, us included, prioritize true no-water emergencies, which can carry a modest premium over a scheduled non-emergency visit.

What keeps a job to the lower end

  • Catching a problem early (a failing pressure switch) before it takes the pump down with it (see our warning signs article)
  • Easy wellhead access with no excavation or equipment needed
  • A well with good, current documentation (depth, yield, existing pump specs) that speeds up sizing and reduces guesswork

A note on lowball quotes

If a quote for submersible pump replacement comes in dramatically below the ranges above, ask what's included — sometimes it's pump-only pricing that excludes wiring, drop pipe, tank work, or a system test, all of which get added afterward. A complete, apples-to-apples quote should say clearly what's covered.
